Manchester United get Frenkie de Jong boost

Man United have just received some good news regarding their pursuit of the Dutch midfielder

After more Barcelona players decided to accept wage deferrals, Manchester United’s efforts to sign Frenkie de Jong have gained momentum.

Manchester United get Frenkie de Jong boost

To attempt and reunite with his former Ajax player at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag has been in negotiations with United, De Jong, and Barcelona for months. The two clubs reached an agreement on the midfielder’s terms over a month ago, but due to a legal issue involving money that the Dutch player claims the Spanish club owes him, not much has happened since.

It seems that the team had started exploring other possibilities for De Jong after the MEN broke the news that United and Juventus had reached an agreement in principle on a transfer deal for Adrien Rabiot. The Reds are reportedly still very interested in pursuing a deal for the 25-year-old and are preparing alternative moves in case the deal cannot be completed.

ESPN has since reported that Barcelona and more of its players have agreed to accept wage deferrals, which appears to be good news for United in their pursuit of De Jong. The La Liga team announced the information over the weekend in a club statement.

The wage deferral appears to offer some relief for the Catalan side, which has been frantically trying to generate money.

Barcelona stated in a press release: “A tentative agreement between the club and the players’ representatives permits a salary adjustment for the current season up to a maximum of €122 million in fixed compensation.

“Additionally, variable compensation from this season, planned at approximately €50 million, will be deferred for up to three years.

“The ratification of the deal is expected in the next few days.”

There is little question that additional wage deferrals will put a larger financial strain on the club, despite the Spanish team’s public claims that this was a significant financial breakthrough. According to the article, players who approved this deferral will also receive 3% interest on the sum they approved.

Barcelona may initially perceive this approach as being advantageous, but the club is aware that in the long run, their financial situation will worsen. If the Catalan side can persuade De Jong to transfer to United and get his pay off their books, an easy answer appears to be right in front of them.
